Your calendar figured this out twenty years ago: give things colors, and you stop reading and start recognizing. Work is blue, family is green, money is orange - you know what your week looks like before you read a single word.
Browsers never got that memo. Fifty tabs look like fifty identical little rectangles, and the bookmarks bar is a wall of text. Here is how to bring color-coding to Chrome - the built-in way, and the automatic way.
What Chrome gives you: tab groups
Chrome's native answer is tab groups: right-click a tab, add it to a group, give the group a name and one of 9 colors. Groups are great for temporary bundles - a research session, a batch of docs for one task.
The limits show up fast. Groups are manual: every new tab has to be dragged in again. The color belongs to the group, not to the website - open the same site tomorrow and it is plain again. And your bookmarks stay colorless, so the recognition you built in the tab strip disappears everywhere else.
Color by website, everywhere
This is the idea behind Color Tabs: give the website a color once, and that color follows it everywhere, automatically. Two clicks - toolbar icon, pick one of Chrome's 9 colors - and the site carries its color on every tab, today and next month.
You choose how it shows: a colored rim on the tab, a colored ring around the favicon, or a named site group that collects all the site's tabs. The same color also lands on the site's bookmarks - in a bookmarks manager where folders can take any color you like, and on an optional Color Bar that replaces Chrome's bookmarks strip with the same design plus your colors.

A color system that actually sticks
The trick is to color categories of your life, not individual sites. Blue for work tools, green for money, orange for travel, purple for learning. Keep it to four or five colors - the point is recognition, and recognition needs repetition. Name the categories once (Color Tabs Pro lets you label colors, calendar-style) and every picker reminds you what each color means.
